Karlets are primitive amphibianoids who live a liquivorous lifestyle. They are found along the "borderlands" between ocean and beach.
Vacotor Database, Terran description

Karlets are a primitive species that evolved during the planet Zffer's equivalent to the Permian Period. Later genuses have been used as domesticated livestock and beasts of burden by the Zfferian people for countless millennia.

Physiology[]

Karlets possess a bulbous body that houses a powerful gut. A long, curved neck extends from the front which is tipped with a long proboscis offset by a pair of red-hued eyes. Two sets of legs extend directly below the body and hold the creature aloft with each foot possessing a pair of large, cushioning toes. Being cold-blooded creatures, they regulate their body temperature throughout the day using a pair of greatly enlarged fins that now act like sails.

Ecology[]

The earliest genus of Karlets were small but opportunistic creatures, using their long proboscis to feed on the decaying fruits dropped by the local vegetation all year round or, in times where fruit is not available, they will actively hunt down Cyan and Yellow Food, two species of very basal organisms.

With the Colony Ship crash that stranded various Earth lifeforms on the planet, the Karlets found themselves being predated upon by tribes of Homo erectus, which led to a herd mentality between them and the significantly larger Zcootches, which were also prey for the hominids. The two species were mutually symbiotic to one another, both using the larger numbers to better their own chances of individual survival. When the Zcootches evolved legs and gave way to the Zelrunas, they were less reliant upon the Karlets for herd survival, but the Karlets continued spending time amongst Zelruna whenever possible, as they were still larger than the Karlets and had begun to fight off H. erectus attacks.
